How it works

Lorem ipsum is a garbled Latin text drawn from a treatise by Cicero, used in printing since the sixteenth century. Its value lies in a distribution of word lengths close to Latin and the Romance languages, without meaning pulling attention away from the layout.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just repeat one sentence?

Because repetition produces an artificial typographic grey and hides hyphenation and line-length problems. Text of varied lengths reveals how the layout really behaves far better.

Can a site ship with lorem ipsum in it?

Best avoided entirely. A search engine indexes that text like any other, and a page of fake Latin sends the worst possible quality signal. It is also exactly the kind of oversight that ends up in production.
