Net / Gross
Net ↔ gross price with VAT
Enter a net or gross amount
Go from a price excluding tax to one including tax, or the other way round, without getting the direction wrong. The tool takes either input: type the amount you know and the other updates. Common French rates are offered, and a free rate covers edge cases or other countries.
How it works
The gross price is the net price multiplied by 1 plus the rate. Going back divides by that same factor, and this is where the classic mistake creeps in: taking 20% off a gross price does not give you the net one.
gross = net × (1 + rate) net = gross ÷ (1 + rate) tax = gross − net
Frequently asked questions
Why does taking 20% off a gross price not give the net price?
Because the 20% is calculated on the net price, not the gross one. Take 20% off €120 and you get €96, while the real net price is €100. You have to divide by 1.2, which amounts to removing about 16.67%.
Which VAT rates apply in France?
20% is the standard rate, 10% covers restaurants and renovation work, 5.5% food and books, 2.1% the press and some medicines. The 0% rate covers exempt cases.
Can I use a foreign rate?
Yes. The selector offers "Other" and accepts any value. The maths does not depend on the country, only on the rate.
